The Tree Remains Unbothered
Beavers took this tree down in service of their dam-building project along the Rockfish River in Virginia. But months later, new shoots push up defiantly from the severed stump.
The tree is likely a Black Willow (Salix nigra), a fast-growing species common to wetland margins, and one known for its ability to regenerate even after being cut. The young reddish shoots emerge in contrast against the weathered, patterned surface of the felled trunk.
A stark portrait of ecological persistence and the slow but certain defiance of life.
