Ruby-throated Hummingbird
A male Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) holds a quiet pose in side light, his gorget ignited in a flash of ruby against deep green shadows. Every scale-like feather catches the light differently, creating a layered mosaic of iridescence and texture. This is a portrait about detail and restraint, about stillness in a creature rarely still. Photographed in Rockfish Valley, Virginia.
